Claims from a prominent biographer have sparked intense debate about Melania Trump's past connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Michael Wolff, who has written extensively about President Donald Trump, alleges the current First Lady moved within Epstein's social circle during her modelling career in the 1990s, a claim that has prompted aggressive legal action from the Trump administration.

The controversy revolves around how Melania met Donald Trump through her modeling career, at a time when Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell wielded considerable power in that industry. The First Lady's legal team slammed Wolff's account almost immediately. That aggressive response worked, forcing a number of major publications to retract their coverage.

Wolff Ties Melania to Epstein's Crowd

Wolff originally aired these claims in a July 2025 interview on The Daily Beast podcast. He alleged that Melania Knauss, as she was known then, was actually quite active in Epstein's social orbit.

He alleged that she was introduced to Donald Trump through Paolo Zampolli, founder of ID Models, who maintained connections to both Epstein and Maxwell. Zampolli played a significant role in helping Melania emigrate to the United States and currently serves as Trump's special representative for global partnerships.

'She's introduced by a model agent, both of whom Trump and Epstein are involved with. She's introduced to Trump that way. Epstein [knew] her well', Wolff stated during the podcast interview. The biographer also claimed to possess recordings in which Epstein allegedly discussed Trump's relationship with Melania, though these tapes have not been independently verified.

First Lady Denies Allegations, Provides Alternative Account

Melania Trump has categorically rejected any connection between Epstein and her relationship with Donald Trump. In her bestselling memoir Melania, published in 2024, she wrote that she first met her husband at New York City's Kit Kat Club in 1998, making no mention of Epstein's involvement. Her account contradicts Wolff's narrative entirely.

The First Lady's office has pursued what sources describe as an unusually aggressive legal strategy. Nick Clemens, a spokesperson for Melania Trump, told NBC News that her legal team is 'pursuing immediate retractions and apologies from those who propagate malicious, defamatory falsehoods'. President Trump himself addressed the matter, stating his wife has been 'very upset' about allegations that 'demean' her.

Publications Retract Stories Following Legal Pressure

The Daily Beast removed its original story headlined 'Melania Trump 'Very Involved' in Epstein Scandal: Author' after determining it did not meet their editorial standards. The publication issued a formal apology to the First Lady, stating the article was based on claims made by Michael Wolff. The outlet also deleted portions of its podcast that featured the controversial interview.

Melania Trump's attorneys have sent legal demands to multiple individuals and outlets, including Democratic strategist James Carville, who issued a retraction and apology after making comments about the First Lady during a podcast.

Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, also received a legal letter demanding over £790 million ($1 billion) in damages for suggesting Epstein introduced Melania to Donald Trump, though Biden refused to comply.

White House Denounces Biographer as Fabricator

The Trump administration has mounted a fierce defence against Wolff's allegations. Communications Director Steven Cheung released a scathing statement calling Wolff 'a lying sack of sh*t' who 'routinely fabricates stories originating from his sick and warped imagination'. The White House has characterised the biographer's claims as stemming from 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.

Wolff's credibility has been questioned by the administration before. Earlier in 2025, Donald Trump described him as a 'third-grade reporter', according to reports. Despite the pushback, Wolff has maintained his position regarding Melania's connections to Epstein's social network through the modelling industry.

No Evidence Links First Lady to Epstein Misconduct

It is crucial to note that no allegations of wrongdoing or misconduct have been levelled against Melania Trump in connection with Epstein. The accusations focus solely on whether she moved in social circles that overlapped with the disgraced financier's during the 1990s modeling scene. Simply being connected to Epstein's network doesn't prove someone participated in his crimes.

Recent Epstein-related documents have named several people now in Trump's orbit, like Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Elon Musk, but these mentions don't suggest any criminal wrongdoing. Back in July 2025, the Justice Department stepped in to address the rumors. They confirmed that an Epstein 'client list' doesn't actually exist.
