'The Mummy 4' With Brendan Fraser: Confirmed Release Date, Cast, and More — Here's What We Know
After years of cancellations and a failed reboot, the original stars are back as the franchise prepares its long-awaited sequel.

Rejoice, 'Mummy' fans! The Mummy franchise is officially returning, with key, fan-favourite actors confirmed for a long-awaited fourth instalment set for release in 2028.
Universal Pictures officially announced The Mummy 4 on 10 February 2026, marking the formal revival of the series. The film is scheduled to open in cinemas on 19 May 2028. For OG fans, its release will come 96 years after the original Boris Karloff film, 29 years after 1999's The Mummy, and 20 years after The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
From Cancellation To Revival
Plans for a fourth film date back to 2008, before the third entry reached cinemas. After The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor received a poor box office response and negative audience reaction, the project was ultimately cancelled in 2012 in favour of a reboot. That reboot became 2017's The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, which launched Universal's Dark Universe but did not continue beyond its first instalment.
Rumours of a direct sequel resurfaced following Brendan Fraser's Academy Award win for Best Actor for The Whale in 2022.
Directors, Screenwriter, and Cast Attached
The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are best known for directing 2022's Scream, its sequel Scream VI, as well as Ready or Not and Abigail. The screenplay has been written by David Coggeshall, whose previous credits include Orphan: First Kill and the upcoming Matchbox film.
In terms of casting, fans of the 90s films will be pleased to hear that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell. Both starred in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, while Fraser also appeared in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Weisz did not return for the third film, where Maria Bello portrayed Evelyn.
Oded Fehr, who played Ardeth Bay in the first two films, has expressed interest in returning. John Hannah, who portrayed Jonathan Carnahan throughout the original trilogy, has also indicated interest. Their involvement is yet to be confirmed.
It remains unclear how the character of Alex O'Connell will be handled. Freddie Boath portrayed the character in The Mummy Returns, while Luke Ford played an adult version in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. There has been no announcement about whether either actor will return, whether the role will be recast, or whether the character will appear at all.
There has also been no confirmation regarding the return of Arnold Vosloo, who played Imhotep in the first two films. The character did not appear in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Plot details for The Mummy 4 are currently being kept under wraps, aside from the confirmed return of Rick and Evelyn.
Director's Early Comments
Director Tyler Gillett addressed the project in an interview with Empire Magazine. He said that stepping into another franchise required something that felt special and that David Coggeshall's script achieved that. He described the screenplay as 'very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun'.
Production Timeline And What Comes Next
Although the release date is set for 19 May 2028, filming has not yet begun. Production could start in late 2026 or early 2027, though no official start date has been confirmed. Further details regarding casting and story are expected to emerge as development progresses.
