It's that time of year again when the most talented small screen stars are celebrated at TV's answer to the Oscars, the National Television Awards.

The annual awards, voted for by viewers will see a host of popular TV shows, presenters and soap actors compete for a variety of coveted gongs.

Dermot O'Leary is set return to hosting duties at the extravaganza held at London's O2 arena.

"One thing I love," he said, "is that there's always a bit of a shock and a surprise as it's all voted for by the Great British public."

This year sees the addition of the TV Detective category to honour the nation's renewed love of mystery.

Doctor Who is up against Downton Abbey in the Drama category, while the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, will go head-to-head with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) for best TV detective.

ITV and the BBC continue to dominate the Talent Show category with The X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Britain's Got Talent, Dancing on Ice and The Voice UK all up for the prestigious accolade.

Voters have until 12pm on Wednesday (22 January) to vote online for their favourites at www.nationaltvawards.com.

IBTimes UK will be live-blogging from the awards ceremony on Wednesday and they will be broadcast live on ITV from 7.30pm.
