Young central defenders Matt Miazga and Jake Clarke-Salter have both travelled to France as part of the Chelsea squad set to contest the Champions League last-16 first-leg match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

The duo are included primarily as cover for John Terry, who was substituted after just 38 minutes of the comprehensive 5-1 home victory over lowly Newcastle United on 13 February due to a hamstring injury suffered following a collision with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The captain did take part in first-team training at Cobham on Monday, but was later excluded from the 21-man party after undergoing further tests. Miazga, 20, has yet to make a senior first-team appearance for Guus Hiddink's side since moving to English football from MLS outfit the New York Red Bulls on a four-and-a-half year deal in January.

Two years the US international's junior, Clarke-Salter is a regular for Chelsea's U21 side and has recently been promoted to the first-team setup, with Kurt Zouma ruled out for six months after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament against Manchester United.

Although neither player will start in Paris, the experience is sure to prove invaluable and their presence seems necessary with Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic – the latter of whom usually plays on the right of a back four – currently Hiddink's only fit senior centre-backs. As was the case against Newcastle, Chelsea are likely to pair the two together and switch Cesar Azpilicueta from left-back, before slotting in Baba Rahman.

Also absent from the Chelsea squad is Alexandre Pato. The Brazilian striker, who has not played first-team football since late November, signed from Corinthians last month on a loan deal until the end of the season, although has yet to be included even as a substitute as he bids to regain full match fitness. Oscar will be available to face PSG after missing the drubbing of Newcastle due to a slight calf problem, while Nemanja Matic also travels– although he cannot play due to suspension.
