The legal mess that Russell Brand has to face continues to pile up following his appearance at Southwark Crown Court in London on Tuesday, 24 February. The 50-year-old celebrity entered a plea of not guilty to two new charges: rape and sexual assault.

The latest offences allegedly committed by Brand happened in 2009. The broadcaster allegedly sexually assaulted one woman and raped another that same year in the British capital.

'These new charges are in relation to two further women and are in addition to the charges issued to Brand in April 2025 which involved four women,' London's Metropolitan Police said in an official statement in December.

Brand, who appeared wearing a leopard-print shirt and a fedora, denied the accusations. He also attended the hearing with a Bible in hand.

Brand's Legal Woes Piling Up

With the two new cases he is facing, the number of charges that Brand is facing has swelled to seven. According to Sky News, the others before this latest row were:

1. One count of rape
2. One count of oral rape
3. Two sexual assault and one of indecent assault

Brand is scheduled to go on trial for the five original charges on 16 June. For now, he is out on bail and was reminded by Mr Justice Bennathan about the conditions that come with it. These include informing authorities of his whereabouts and making sure he attends court hearings, The Guardian reported.

Police started their investigation into Brand in 2023. This was after several women accused him of misconduct following an investigation by Channel 4's Dispatches, The Times and The Sunday Times.

No Escaping A Dark Past

Although Brand is a born-again Christian, he admits that he has a dark past. He dealt with drug-related and anger management issues, much of which were well documented.

'When I was young and single, before I had my wife and family... I was a fool, man. I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile,' Brand admitted in a video on X (formerly Twitter) in April 2025. 'But what I never was was a rapist. I have never engaged in non-consensual activity,' he added.

The current developments are unfortunate, especially considering Brand's rise to fame. The Essex native made a name for himself as a stand-up comedian and television host.

Beyond these, he was also able to etch his name into Hollywood. He appeared in several films, such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Arthur (2011) and Rock of Ages (2012), to name a few.

Brand has so far gone through two marriages. His first was with American pop star Katy Perry, whom he married in 2010. However, that marriage did not last due to irreconcilable differences. Russell is currently married to Laura Gallacher, with whom he has three children.

The life of Brand has been a roller-coaster ride, and the misdirection proved costly. However, Brand found a way to try to reform for the good and continues to try.

Regardless, it remains that Brand needs to face the mistakes he made in the past. He remains accountable and needs to accept whatever verdict comes out after the series of trials he is scheduled to face.
