Sony's Rumoured PS6 Handheld Leak Claims 540p Rendering With PSSR 3.0 Upscaling to 1080p
The 'Project Canis' specifications include a custom AMD chip, 24GB of shared memory and separate portable and docked performance profiles

A new leak claims Sony's rumoured PS6 handheld, known as Project Canis, could render games internally at 540p in portable mode, then use PSSR 3.0 to upscale the image to a native 1080p display.
The report, shared by PC hardware website GameGPU, also points to a late 2027 launch target. The PS6 handheld has previously been linked to the codename Project Canis, while GameGPU refers to the device as 'PSP 3'.
The latest leak outlines a custom AMD processor, shared memory, power limits and a graphics setup designed around lower native rendering resolution, with reconstruction technology expected to raise image quality.
PS6 Handheld Leak Details AMD Canis Hardware
According to GameGPU, the handheld would use a custom 3-nanometre AMD Canis processor with six Zen 6 CPU cores. The configuration reportedly includes four standard Zen 6c cores and two lower-power Zen 6 LP cores.
The system is also claimed to carry 24 GB of shared LPDDR5X memory on a 192-bit bus. Power limits would range from 15 W to 25 W, while the graphics processor is described as having 16 Compute Units based on RDNA 5 architecture with support for Dual-Issue FP32 instructions.
In portable mode, the processor is said to run at 1.2 GHz and deliver 4.91 TFLOPS. Docking the device would reportedly raise the clock speed to 1.65 GHz, with peak compute performance increasing to 6.75 TFLOPS.
In practical terms, the leak describes two performance profiles for the same hardware: the portable setting favours a lower power envelope, while the docked setting allows higher clocks and a higher claimed compute ceiling.
Those figures alone are only part of the picture. The leak places much of the handheld's expected performance on PSSR 3.0, which GameGPU says will add frame generation support.
The report links that expectation to earlier comments from PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny, who had teased frame generation technology for PlayStation consoles earlier this year.
PS6 Handheld Could Use 540p Rendering With PSSR 3.0
GameGPU claims the PS6 handheld's portable power limits would make 540p the internal rendering target, with PSSR 3.0 then reconstructing the image for a 1080p Full HD screen.
The website further estimates an effective performance level of 10 to 11 TFLOPS in portable mode and 14 TFLOPS when docked.
Those 'effective' figures rely on the claimed benefits of PSSR 3.0 rather than the raw compute numbers alone. GameGPU argues that the resulting performance could surpass the base PlayStation 5 and move closer to the PlayStation 5 Pro, which it lists at 16.7 TFLOPS.
The same leak also lines up with earlier claims from insider Kepler_L2, who said Project Canis could exceed the Xbox Series S, listed at 4 TFLOPS, in rasterisation performance while offering a larger advantage in ray tracing and path tracing.
Kepler_L2 also claimed PSSR 3 could exceed NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 in image quality. That assertion remains part of the leak cycle around the device rather than an independently demonstrated result.
PS6 Handheld Launch Window Remains Unclear
GameGPU adds that Sony is targeting a late 2027 release for Project Canis. The information provided does not clearly link the timing to the wider PlayStation 6 launch.
Separate rumours cited alongside the leak suggest the main PlayStation 6 could move beyond 2027. For now, the handheld's proposed launch window, 540p internal rendering target and reliance on PSSR 3.0 remain the central claims surrounding Project Canis.
