A woman in Houston fatally shot her common-law husband in the groin after finding him with another woman.

Police said 58-year-old Debra Davis discovered her common-law husband Rodney Johnson was at a southeast Houston home on Tuesday (1 August) with his mistress and confronted him there. He and Davis lived in Missouri City, but Johnson would travel to Sunnyside to meet other women.

Neighbours told authorities they heard Davis and Johnson arguing shortly before midnight and then heard gunshots. Johnson was shot in the lower torso on the street and later died at Ben Taub Hospital.

"I heard one gun shot, and I came out and he was already lying there in the street. We tried to do CPR and...it was already over by the time he was transported," neighbour Diondra Jefferson told ABC13.

Johnson's girlfriend, who was not identified and was at the scene during the shooting, was not injured.

"His girlfriend came and she shot him because he's messing around with women," Johnson's cousin Robert Johnson said. "You know these things are love things."

According to KHOU, a divorce attorney said Davis is still legally married to another man and is currently in the midst of a divorce. ABC13 confirmed that Davis' divorce to her husband of 30 years, Roger Davis, is not yet final.

Davis turned herself into police and was booked at the Harris County Jail, KHOU reported. She reportedly admitted to her role in her in Johnson's death and was charged with murder. She has not yet been arraigned.
