Man Dressed as Batman Chases Suspected Handbag Thief Before Scaling Wall To Recover Stolen Bag

A man dressed as Batman chased a suspected handbag thief through Norwich before scaling a high wall to recover the stolen bag during a bizarre night out on Saturday, 19 September. Sonni Mason, 25, was attending a friend's fancy-dress party when he witnessed a handbag being snatched after an argument in a nightclub queue.

Mason was not alone. Several other partygoers dressed as comic-book characters, including Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four and Poison Ivy from the Batman franchise, joined him in the pursuit.

The unlikely group even flagged down police officers on routine night-time patrols as they tried to locate the suspected thief. By the time they caught up with the trail, however, the suspect had disappeared, and the handbag was nowhere to be seen.

The police later confirmed that the bag was eventually found with all its contents intact and returned to its owner. Mason, meanwhile, was left with the rather more theatrical task of retrieving it.

Batman Chases Suspected Thief Through Norwich

According to Mason, the handbag had reportedly been taken during an altercation in the queue for a nightclub. He said he and the other people in costume immediately gave chase.

A tip-off eventually led them to the area around Norwich Cathedral, where the missing handbag was discovered roughly 300 metres from the place where it had allegedly been snatched.

There was just one problem. The bag was sitting on top of a high flint wall around the cathedral perimeter.

The group first tried to get it down without climbing the wall. Their improvised attempt involved using a roll of toilet paper, but it failed.

Mason then climbed the wall himself, still wearing his Batman costume, and retrieved the handbag.

He returned it to its owner with everything inside still intact.

Much of the episode was captured in a TikTok video later uploaded to Mason's account. In a post describing the evening, he wrote that he, Poison Ivy, Mister Fantastic and other 'heroes' had chased the suspected thief after the bag was taken.

The footage turned an ordinary night out into something resembling a scene from Gotham City, albeit with fewer gadgets and considerably more toilet paper.

Norwich Batman Says Helping Others Was the Real Point

Mason, who is from London and works in a café, told SWNS that the experience was less about dressing up as a superhero and more about helping someone who had been targeted.

'I hope I can inspire people to be a little bit more like Batman. Not so much the running around in the dark in a costume but helping others out. I didn't expect to be scaling up a wall,' he said.

He said Batman's appeal, for him, was rooted in protecting other people rather than fighting criminals.

'Everyone needs a little bit of Batman. You have to be brave, bold and kind. I would hope everyone else would do the same, whether or not they are wearing a cape or a cowl.'

Mason also stressed that his actions were not about confronting the suspected thief violently.

Rather than jumping from rooftops or beating people up, he said he wanted to make sure people were safe.

'That's what [Batman] is about. He's a protector.'

He added that people should be willing to help someone who is being mugged or feels uncomfortable on a night out, regardless of whether they happen to be wearing a superhero costume.

Norfolk Police gave a more matter-of-fact account of the incident. A spokesperson said officers conducting routine night-time economy patrols in Norwich were approached by a member of the public on Saturday, 19 September, who asked for help locating a missing bag.

'Following inquiries at the scene, the bag was located with all of its contents intact and subsequently returned to its owner,' the spokesperson said.

Police did not confirm in the statement whether the suspected thief had been identified or arrested.
