Who Is Alleigha Botner? 'American Idol' Alum Caleb Flynn's Ex-Mistress Takes the Stand in His Wife's Murder Trial

Alleigha Botner became a prosecution witness in the murder trial of former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn after prosecutors alleged that the pair had been involved in a lengthy affair before Flynn's wife, Ashley, was fatally shot.

Botner, 24, took the stand on 23 September and described her relationship with Flynn, including his repeated promises to leave his marriage and statements he allegedly made about Ashley. She also told jurors that her feelings towards Flynn had changed dramatically since Ashley's death.

Botner grew up in Ohio and graduated from Graham High School in 2020. School district records confirm that she was among the school's Class of 2020 graduates, while a graduation profile said she planned to attend Ohio University to study Choral Music Education, with hopes of joining the university's Marching 110 and playing trumpet.

Public information does not establish whether Botner ultimately completed that degree, so her Ohio University education should be described as a plan rather than a confirmed qualification. By 2026, Botner was working in Christian ministry as a worship leader at Christian Life Center in Dayton, where Flynn was also involved in worship ministry.

Following Flynn's arrest, church leadership announced that Botner had resigned from her position without providing an explanation. She was later included on the state's witness list in Flynn's case, having largely been known for her involvement in music and Christian worship before the case brought her into the public spotlight.

Alleigha Botner and Caleb Flynn's Relationship Before Ashley's Death

Botner testified that she first met Flynn in 2022 while she was an intern at the church. According to her testimony, their relationship became romantic in March 2024.

She testified that the relationship became serious and that they discussed a future together. Botner also told jurors that she and Flynn got matching lightning-bolt tattoos, with Flynn placing his in his armpit so Ashley would not see it.

During her testimony, Botner described Flynn repeatedly saying he intended to leave Ashley. She said she gave him deadlines to end the marriage and that, on 15 February, he told her he had already told Ashley he wanted a divorce and planned to tell his in-laws the following day.

Prosecutors have presented more than 100,000 messages between Flynn and Botner and allege the messages contained discussions about Flynn's desire to end his marriage, as well as statements about Ashley. The defence has argued that an affair and disturbing messages do not, by themselves, prove that Flynn killed his wife.

When prosecutors asked Botner how she felt about Flynn now, she replied, 'I hate him', adding that she believed he killed his wife.

How Did Ashley Flynn Die? Husband Charged in Murder Case

Ashley Flynn, 37, was fatally shot at the couple's home in Tipp City, Ohio, on 16 February 2026. Her obituary described her as a devoted wife and mother of two daughters who worked with LifeWise Academy, served as a substitute teacher and coached seventh-grade volleyball, while also being active at Christian Life Center.

After Ashley was found dead in her bed, Caleb initially told authorities that an intruder had entered the home and shot her. Prosecutors now allege that Flynn shot Ashley while she was sleeping and staged the scene to resemble a home invasion.

Investigators have testified that there were no signs of forced entry or a struggle and that Ashley appeared to have been asleep when she was shot. An investigator concluded that the scene had been staged to resemble a burglary, an allegation disputed by the defence.

Flynn was arrested and later indicted on charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case.

He has pleaded not guilty, while the defence has also pointed to the fact that the firearm prosecutors allege was used in the killing has not been recovered.

The trial remains ongoing, and Botner's testimony forms part of the prosecution's evidence concerning Flynn's marriage, his relationship with Ashley and his alleged affair before her death.
