Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are set to compete for the signature of Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia who has been linked with several clubs already this summer.

The Italy international impressed in a struggling Inter side that finished ninth last season and it seems he may well be offered a route out of the club, with various European sides said to be keen to secure his services.

Manchester United, Napoli and Italian champions Juventus have all been credited with having an interest in the centre-back, while the Express reports that Tottenham and Arsenal have now also entered the fray.

Tottenham do have a number of options in defence but manager Andre Villas-Boas may decide he needs further strength after William Gallas was allowed to leave the club.

With Jan Vertonghen often filling in at left-back, and with Younes Kaboul missing almost the entire of last season, it seems the Portuguese tactician may feel the need for further options in defence.

Tottenham have already signed Paulinho for £17m and it is believed they are also keen to bring another forward to the club. Much will then depend on their finances as to whether they can compete for Ranocchia.

The 25 year old has previously played for Genoa and has been capped by Italy on 10 occasions, last appearing in the 4-0 friendly win over San Marino back in May.

Ronocchia may well have a choice of clubs in north London as it seems Arsenal are also interested as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his squad in order to once again challenge for major honours.

With question marks over the performances of Thomas Vermaelen, there has been speculation that Arsenal were looking to sign Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.

That interest seems to have faded and they may now decide to move for Ranocchia who may well decide that playing in the Champions League next season is important.
