The Scottish ice hockey community is mourning the tragic loss of 19-year-old Gary Kelly, whose promising life was cut short after a fatal fall at Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio.

Kelly's sudden death in the early hours of Monday, 21 July 2025, has deeply shaken his friends, teammates and fans, sparking an outpouring of tributes from hockey clubs across the UK.

The tragedy has also rocked the popular party venue, prompting Ibiza Rocks to suspend all music events while Spanish authorities continue their investigation. Kelly is the second British tourist to die at the hotel in just two weeks.

Talented Hockey Star Remembered

Gary Kelly was widely regarded as one of Scottish ice hockey's brightest young talents, according to a report in the BBC. He played for top clubs including Dundee Stars, Aberdeen Lynx, Whitley Warriors, and Glasgow Clan, and was admired for both his on-ice skill and charismatic personality.

Teammates and coaches remembered Kelly not only for his ability but also for the warmth, positivity and energy he brought to everyone around him.

Off the ice, Kelly was celebrated for his kindness and infectious enthusiasm. His girlfriend, Louise Essery, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, praising his passion and dedication to hockey, work, and his loved ones. She also asked for privacy as the family grieves this devastating loss.

Tragic Incident Under Investigation

Kelly's death occurred shortly after midnight, when he reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Paramedics arrived quickly but were unable to save him.

Spain's Civil Guard stated that initial indications suggest the fall may have been accidental, but a full investigation is ongoing, including the review of CCTV footage and interviews with witnesses.

This is the second fatal incident at Ibiza Rocks this month. On 7 July, 26-year-old Scottish tourist Evan Thomson also died after falling at the same venue.

Clubs and Community Mourn Gary Kelly

Messages of condolence have poured in from across the UK ice hockey scene. Dundee Stars described Kelly's loss as 'heartbreaking' and praised his immense potential. Aberdeen Lynx and other clubs echoed these sentiments, highlighting his commitment to the sport and his ability to lift the spirits of those around him.

His sisters, Kharis and Paige, also paid tribute and asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Ibiza Rocks Suspends Events in Wake of Tragedy

In response to the two recent deaths, Ibiza Rocks has suspended all scheduled music events, including performances by Dizzee Rascal and Rudimental. Hotel management said they are 'deeply shocked and devastated' by the tragedies and remain focused on guest safety, pledging to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The deaths have cast a shadow over Ibiza's party scene, prompting fresh concerns about guest safety at popular holiday venues.
