Gone are the days when you could simply ask your high school crush to be your date to the dance. Thanks to social media, the proposal must be creative and extravagant in equal measure and there must be camera-ready to capture the exquisite moment.

When your love interest is Hollywood star Emma Stone, the pressure to deliver an Oscar-worthy 'promposal' is multiplied and high school student Jacob Staudenmaier did not disappoint. He pulled out all the stops with his recreation of La La Land's opening scene in a bid to woo the actress.

The 17-year-old aspiring filmmaker from Scottsdale, Arizona revised the lyrics to Another Day of Sun – the opening highway set piece to the musical – and also directed the video which features some of his friends, and emulates the one-take style of the original.

"I rewrote the lyrics to the song myself and directed the video and did the choreography too, but thank you so much to all the friends and adults who came out to help make it happen," he says, in the caption for the clip now going viral.

"It started with the kind of crazy idea of saying, 'Yeah, maybe I'll go with Emma Stone to the prom,'" Staudenmaier told USA Today. "I decided if I was going to do this, I really needed to do it big."

He added: "I haven't heard anything specifically from her. I've heard a rumour and sort of a confirmed truth that her mum has seen it. I assume at some point it will get to her," Jacob said.

Stone is yet to comment on the promposal, but there's a good chance she is somewhere on cloud nine and dancing among the stars. The big day is on 29 April, so hopefully she gets in touch.
