Roman Reigns successfully defended his WWE heavyweight champion title for the first time at Payback on 1 May since winning the belt after his victory over Triple H at WrestleMania 32. Reigns defeated AJ Styles, who did impress the crowd with his solid performance during the main card.

The Reigns-Styles match was restarted twice but in the end the champion speared his opponent to retain his title. After the main card, Vince McMahon, Stephanie and Shane agreed on giving Styles a rematch with Reigns in three weeks at Extreme Rules. The other title fights were also impressive but no title exchanged hands at the event. Moreover at the event, Vince also announced that both Stephanie and Shane will be in control of Raw.

Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles

Reigns defeated AJ Styles to retain his title.

Intercontinental Championship Match:

Miz retained the title for pinning Cesaro with a roll-up. Cesaro had Miz tap out with a crossface but the referee was distracted by the Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens brawl that found its way into the ring. Miz capitalised on the distraction and was able to roll-up Cesaro.

Women's Championship Match:

Charlotte defeated Natalya after the former applied the sharpshooter and referee Charles Robinson had to stop the match.

Number Tag Team Championship Match:

The Vaudevillains defeated Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady. The match ended after Enzo Amore suffered an injury.

United States Championship Kickoff Match:

Kalisto defeated Ryback

Other matches:

Dean Ambrose defeated Chris Jericho

Dolph Ziggler defeated Baron Corbin

Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn
