2026 Midterms Could See ICE at Polls, Leavitt Tells Press—Voter Concerns Rise
'I can't guarantee that an ICE agent won't be around a polling location'

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged in an abrupt press briefing on 5 February that she couldn't guarantee Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) wouldn't be around polling stations when the 2026 midterm elections swing by. Her statement sparked alarm through the US political landscape.
Leavitt's statement came as a response to Steve Bannon, former White House strategist, who said in his War Room podcast earlier this week, 'We're going to have ICE surround the polls come November.' When asked to clarify her view on Trump deploying ICE agents, referencing Bannon's comment, Leavitt responded with, 'That's not something I've ever heard the president consider, no.'
Leavitt was subsequently asked if she could provide the Americans a guarantee of ICE backing down; she responded with, 'I can't guarantee that an ICE agent won't be around a polling location in November.'

She continued, 'I mean frankly, that's a very silly, hypothetical question. But what I can tell you is I haven't heard the president discuss any formal plans to put ICE outside of polling locations.'
On Political Division and Voter Anxiety
The vague answers provided by Karoline Leavitt intensified an already existing voter anxiety, as the mere possibility of ICE agents around election centres could reduce turnout, critics warn. Their mere presence could leave immigrant families and minority voters intimidated, which could amplify Republican victories in the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to an Independent report.
Vote.gov has barred permanent legal residents in the US from voting in federal, state, and most local elections, and registering can even affect their citizenship. This could only mean ICE would not be deployed to curb illegal voters participating in the elections.
Leavitt left these remarks in the midst of national political tensions that highlight Trump's desire to 'nationalise' elections, and suggest that Republicans take control of the elections in several states. This bold move could breach constitutional norms, according to a Reuters report.
Minneapolis Shootings: ICE Pressure Mounting
According to a WFMJ report, democrats have threatened to block the forthcoming Homeland Security Department following its expiry in the next fortnight, should the agency fail to present 'dramatic changes' and 'real accountability' from ICE and other agencies carrying out President Trump's immigration crackdown campaign in Minnesota and in other states.
Last week, FBI agents served a search warrant at the election facilities of Fulton County, Georgia and seized ballots and election documents, as US President Donald Trump claims the 2020 election against former president Joe Biden was 'taken from him.' The search was conducted by the National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard.

Whether or not US President Donald Trump or the Republicans will heed to the Democrats' demands of unmasking ICE officers and identifying themselves in operations remains unclear. Reportedly, Republicans have rejected these demands.
With midterms around the corner, the issue of ICE near polling places could rally both Republicans and Democrats, with Republicans potentially leveraging their stance on law-and-order, while the latter may emphasise concerns over interference and voter restriction. The presence of ICE near polling places remains a mystery, although Leavitt's statements have already become a flashpoint that has inadvertently stirred fear across a deeply divided nation.
