Edinburgh Airport Crash: Police Hunt Mercedes Trio Who Fled Horror Smash That Killed Driver, 58

A four-vehicle crash on the busy A8 near Edinburgh Airport claimed the life of a 58-year-old man. The man was driving a grey Hyundai i30, one of the vehicles involved. Four others were rushed to hospital for treatment but were later released.

Police launched a search against two women and a man who fled the scene on foot. Initial investigation revealed they were in a grey Mercedes A250, which was involved in the crash. The other two vehicles were a black Renault Captur and a grey Skoda Karoq.

Police Scotland Appeal for Information

The police hunt was immediate, with air support and the dog unit deployed to find the three people. Inspector Thomas Mallinson of Police Scotland is asking the public for help in probing the multiple-vehicle collision.

'My thoughts are with the family of the person who died at this incredibly difficult time,' Mallinson said. 'Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash, and it is vital we trace the three people who left the area before police arrived.'

'I am appealing for anyone who witnessed it or who has information which could assist our investigation to contact us. I would also ask anyone who was in the area and may have dash-cam footage to please get in touch if it holds anything which would be relevant,' Mallinson also said.

Traffic Reopened

The crash happened around 9:25 a.m. near Edinburgh Airport, causing heavy traffic. Around 10:05 a.m., Traffic Scotland posted on social media: 'The A8 is currently closed in both directions between Newbridge Roundabout and Gogar due to a road traffic collision. Police are in attendance. Avoid the area where possible and use alternative routes currently.'

Edinburgh Airport also issued an advisory: Please be aware of an accident on the A8 near the airport. Police are in attendance but delays getting to the airport are expected.

It wasn't until 7:05 p.m. that A8 was reopened. The closure caused delays for people travelling to Edinburgh Airport. For some, the tram became the best option.

Some travelers got heated due to the traffic situation. One tweeted on X: 'FFS where the Hell has Traffic Scotland been today—100% asleep at the wheel, why does it take them over 6 hours to update info?'

Traffic Scotland respondent: 'Hi there, if you scroll through the thread above, you will see that we posted several live updates about this incident throughout the day, despite the initial incident not occurring on a trunk road. Thanks.'

The social media user said it would have been better if updates were also posted on the website and not just on X.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it had transported three patients to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. 'We received a call at 9.22 to attend a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A8 near Ingliston,' a spokesperson said.

'We dispatched three ambulances, two special operations response teams, a paramedic response unit and a critical care paramedic to the scene. We transported three patients to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary,' the Service spokesperson also said.
