A senior US lawmaker has demanded the urgent release of a five-year-old boy currently held in an immigration detention centre, warning that his health is deteriorating rapidly. Congressman Joaquin Castro has called for the child, Liam Conejo Ramos, to be freed immediately after visiting the facility where he is detained.

Liam is currently being held at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, alongside his father. Images of the boy, taken shortly after his arrest in Minnesota, have sparked outrage and intensified scrutiny of the conditions faced by migrant families in custody.

School Community Raises The Alarm

Liam was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents earlier on 20 January in Minnesota. Before his detention, he was a student in the Columbia Heights Public Schools District. The situation has caused deep distress within his local school community. Zena Stenvik, the superintendent for the district, has taken the unusual step of speaking publicly to the media to advocate for the boy's welfare.

Stenvik told the Huffington Post that she had a telephone conversation with Liam's mother, Erika Ramos, on Tuesday, 27 January. According to the superintendent, the mother was 'incredibly distraught' about the condition of her son. The separation of the family and the illness of the child have created a crisis situation.

'Unfortunately, Liam's health is not doing great right now,' Stenvik told the news outlet. 'He's been ill. I've been told he has a fever. So I'm very, very concerned about his well-being in that facility.'

Poor Conditions And Diet Blamed For Illness

The primary concern regarding Liam's health revolves around his ability to eat and keep food down. According to his mother, the conditions inside the detention centre are directly contributing to his sickness. Erika Ramos has stated that the food provided to the detainees is of poor quality and is not suitable for a young child.

'Liam is getting sick because the food they receive is not of good quality,' Erika said. She described a worrying set of symptoms that include stomach pain, vomiting, and a high fever. Perhaps most concerning for a child of his age is that he has stopped eating. 'He no longer wants to eat,' she added.

Medical experts often warn that for a five-year-old, persistent vomiting and a refusal to eat can lead to dehydration very quickly. In a detention setting, where access to specialised paediatric care may be limited compared to a hospital, these symptoms can become dangerous in a short amount of time.

Congressman Castro Steps In

The case has drawn the attention of Congressman Joaquin Castro. The Congressman visited the facility to inspect the conditions and has since championed Liam's cause. His involvement has turned what was a local Minnesota story into a national issue regarding the treatment of migrant children.

Castro is demanding that ICE release Liam and his father immediately so that the boy can receive proper medical attention. He argues that a detention centre is no place for a sick child and that the government has a duty of care that is not being met. The Congressman's office has highlighted that keeping a sick child in such conditions could lead to severe long-term health consequences.

Concerns Over Detention Standards

This incident has once again shone a spotlight on the South Texas Family Residential Center. It is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the United States. In the past, advocates have raised concerns about the medical care and nutritional standards provided to the families held there.

For the community in Minnesota, the wait is agonising. The school district and the family are hoping that the pressure from a high-profile figure like Congressman Castro will force immigration authorities to act. They are asking for humanitarian compassion to allow Liam to recover in a safe environment, rather than a holding cell.

As of Friday, ICE has not released a statement confirming whether they will grant the request for release. Liam remains in custody, and his mother reports that his condition has not improved.
