It was a Mercedes dominated practice session with Lewis Hamilton beating Nico Rosberg to the fastest time in both FP1 and FP2. To win the race is the Briton's best hope of defending his Drivers' World Championship title, while his teammate can win his maiden title by securing any place on the podium.
The Mercedes cars are likely to be fighting for the front two slots on the grid, but Ferrari and Red Bull have shown good single-lap pace with Sebastian Vettel just two tenths behind the fastest Mercedes car. Hamilton will be desperate to get pole position to ensure he is in the best position to get a clean start and concentrate on his own race rather than get entangled with the rest of the grid going into turn one.
Ferrari and Red Bull are not going to go easy owing to the tense title battle and will be looking to achieve the best result they can, even if it means spoiling the race for one of the Silver Arrows cars. Vettel and Max Verstappen are battling for fourth place on the grid, which could also come to the fore during the race even though all the attention is on the championship battle.
