Ander Herrera celebrates Ashley Young's goal against LA Galaxy.

Manchester United summer signing Ander Herrera expressed his delight following their 7-0 victory in the first pre-season clash against LA Galaxy on Wednesday.

The match at the Rose Bowl Stadium in the US marked the 24-year-old's first appearance in the Red Devils' colours. Louis van Gaal lined up his side in a 3-5-2 formation which he utilised at the World Cup with the Netherlands.

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and youngster Reece James each netted a brace for the Old Trafford club against David Beckham's former team.

Herrera justified the £29m fee United paid to acquire his services from Atheltic Bilbao by chipping in with a Man of the Match performance. The midfielder starred alongside his compatriot Juan Mata and Darren Fletcher to create opportunities for his new teammates.

"It was a dream for me to play in the red shirt – I will keep this shirt with me always. I hope this is the start of a lot of games for United. It wasn't only me in this game though, I think the whole team enjoyed the game and did well," Herrera told United's official website.

"It's the first match and we have done good things. It's a good step and we're very happy. The manager said to us afterwards that he was pleased with the game and a good performance but he wants us to keep improving."

"We have to keep working hard. 7-0 is a great score but it's a friendly game. It's important for us to start with a win like this and it will help us keep improving," he concluded.

Meanwhile, United have to play three more fixtures in the Guinness International Champions Cup against AS Roma, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and the final if they progress, before returning to England.
