Anna Faris has shared a more specific update on her sobriety, saying she has been sober for 18 months, as she responded on Instagram this week to 'Mom' creator Chuck Lorre after he wrote in his new memoir that his reluctance to cast her had been proven right.

The actress, who played recovering alcoholic Christy Plunkett for seven seasons, turned a public swipe from her former boss into something far more personal. She tied the role she once performed to the recovery she has since lived through.

'Of Course It Hurts'

'Yikes. Yes**.** I read a few things. I really didn't see that coming. Of course it hurts,' Faris wrote on Thursday. She added that Chuck 'gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted.'

Faris then disclosed the detail that re-framed the story. 'I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it,' she wrote, confirming she has been sober for 18 months. 'Now I'm healthy, I'm working**,** and I'm happier than I've been in a long time.'

She closed with a message to anyone facing the same struggle. 'It gets better. I'm proof,' she wrote.

What Chuck Lorre Wrote

Lorre's memoir 'Sitcom', released on 13 October, revisited his decision to hire Faris for the comedy he co-created with Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker. 'I initially said no. I wasn't sure Anna would be appropriate for this kind of material,' he wrote.

He changed his mind after considering his fraught history with Charlie Sheen, concluding that 'someone's personal life is none of my business.' Years later, he took a harder line. 'My initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct,' he wrote, adding that she left 'for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.'

The 2020 Exit in a Different Light

The comments sit awkwardly against the record. When Faris left ahead of the eighth and final season in 2020, Warner Bros. Television, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions issued a joint statement calling her 'the first and only choice for the role of Christy.'

At the time, Faris called her seven years on the show some of the most rewarding of her career. The series, set in Napa, California, paired her with Allison Janney as her on-screen mother, Bonnie Plunkett, and ran for one more season without her before ending in 2021, its cancellation confirmed in February 2021.

Why Her Disclosure Lands

Faris had already begun speaking openly about sobriety. On the 'Dear Chelsea' podcast in August, she told host Chelsea Handler there was 'a correlation between drinking and depression' for her, and said she had to step back to avoid self-sabotage. She stepped away from acting for much of the period that followed her 'Mom' exit, returning to acting this year with the 'Scary Movie' revival.

The appeal is less about celebrity feuding than about a familiar experience: being publicly undercut by a former employer while quietly rebuilding in private. Her reply this week moved the story past a Hollywood dispute and into the kind of recovery many readers recognise. A former boss criticised her in print. Faris answered by showing how far she has come.
