Chuck Lorre Says Anna Faris Left 'Mom' for 'Mysterious Reasons' That Were No Mystery to Those on Set
The sitcom creator reflects on his initial doubts about casting Faris and says her exit confirmed his earlier reservations, without explaining what he meant

Chuck Lorre has revisited Anna Faris' departure from Mom, writing that the reasons behind her exit were no mystery to those who worked on the sitcom. In his memoir, Sitcom, the television creator reflects on his initial reluctance to cast Faris and says her departure appeared to confirm his earlier reservations.
Lorre's comments offer his personal assessment of the casting decision and Faris' exit. However, the passage reported from his memoir does not identify a specific incident or fully explain the circumstances to which he was referring.
Why Did Chuck Lorre Initially Doubt Anna Faris?
Faris played Christy Plunkett, a single mother navigating recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, in Mom. The comedy also explored family relationships, personal struggles and the challenges of rebuilding a life after addiction. Allison Janney co-starred as Christy's mother, Bonnie Plunkett.
In his memoir, Lorre acknowledged that he initially had reservations about hiring Faris for the lead role.
'I initially said no. I wasn't sure Anna would be appropriate for this kind of material,' he wrote.
Lorre also reflected on his troubled working relationship with Charlie Sheen, who starred in his sitcom Two and a Half Men. He wrote that he had 'bungled' that relationship before explaining why he ultimately reconsidered casting Faris.
He explained his thinking in the memoir, writing: 'Someone's personal life is none of my business. The mom in Mom would be, and should be, Anna Faris.'
Faris ultimately played Christy for seven seasons, from 2013 to 2020. Her departure came before the eighth and final season, although the series continued without her.
Lorre later reflected on his original reservations, writing: 'As the years went by, it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct.'
What Did Lorre Mean by 'Mysterious Reasons'?
Lorre also addressed Faris' departure in his memoir, writing: 'After six years, she left the show for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.'
Faris left Mom in 2020 after seven seasons, although Lorre described the period as six years in his memoir. He did not elaborate in the reported passage on the reasons he believed were understood by people working on the series.
Lorre's comments have brought renewed attention to Faris' departure. However, he did not identify a specific incident or explain the circumstances behind his remark in the reported passage, so the precise reasons he had in mind remain unclear.
How Has Anna Faris Explained Her Departure?
Faris has discussed the demands of working on Mom since leaving the series. In a June 2026 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she reflected on the intensity of the production and how it affected her focus.
'I do think the intensity, towards the end, I think I started to lose my focus,' she said.
Faris also described the period as 'a complicated time'. Her comments provide her perspective on the experience of working on the sitcom, but she did not directly address the circumstances Lorre alluded to in his memoir.
In her 2020 departure statement, Faris said: 'The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career.' She also thanked Lorre, the writers and her castmates.
Her remarks reflect her appreciation for the series, alongside her later reflections on the intensity of the work. They do not establish the specific reasons Lorre had in mind when discussing her departure.
Did 'Mom' Find Its Voice After Faris Left?
Lorre also praised the sitcom's later seasons in his memoir, writing that Mom had 'found its true voice' towards the end of its run. The series continued to explore addiction, recovery and the relationships among its central characters after Faris' departure.
The show premiered in 2013 and concluded in 2021 after eight seasons. Faris appeared in the first seven seasons, while Janney continued in the leading role through the final season.
