Roseanne Barr Prepares Sitcom Comeback With Meemaw

Roseanne Barr says Elon Musk did not return her call when she sought help, even as she pressed ahead with a privately financed sitcom intended to bring her back to scripted television.

The comedian has finished filming Meemaw, an eight-episode family comedy made in Austin, Texas. However, no broadcaster, streaming platform or premiere date had been announced in the reporting available on 9 October.

Musk Call Went Unanswered, Barr Says

Asked whether Musk had invested in the project, Barr told Page Six in an interview published on 8 October: 'He wouldn't call me back.'

She said private investors had provided enough money for a fully union production. The report said Musk did not respond to its request for comment.

Barr's account does not establish why the call went unanswered or whether Musk considered a formal investment proposal. No public commitment by him to finance Meemaw was identified. There is also a distinction between backing a television production and Musk's previous offer to support people facing workplace consequences for their social media activity.

In August 2023, Musk said X would fund legal bills for users treated unfairly by employers because of posts or likes on the platform. That pledge concerned legal assistance; it did not promise to finance entertainment projects.

A Texas Family Comedy Takes Shape

Meemaw centres on a grandmother leading a mixed-race family of preppers in Texas while organising her granddaughter's bat mitzvah. Randy Quaid, Drea de Matteo and Omar Gooding are among the cast. Barr developed the series with Allan Stephan and Allen Covert.

The production may have attracted wider attention this week, but Barr had already discussed it publicly months earlier.

An episode of The Roseanne Barr Podcast published on 17 April 2026 featured Covert and explicitly named Meemaw in its title. The official episode description said their conversation explored the show's origins, experiences on set and the process of creating a comedy together.

That earlier discussion provides a clearer timeline for the project. October's report concerns a completed production and Barr's account of its financing, rather than the first public disclosure that the sitcom existed.

A Comeback Beyond the 2018 Cancellation

ABC cancelled the Roseanne revival in May 2018 after Barr posted a racist remark about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. The network subsequently commissioned The Conners, retaining actors including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert. Its official announcement specified that Barr would have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.

Barr nevertheless continued working in entertainment. Fox Nation released her stand-up special Roseanne Barr: Cancel This! in February 2023, alongside a documentary about her career.

The special was filmed before an audience at Houston's Cullen Theatre and included material about her upbringing, family and move to Texas. It was a stand-up performance, a different format from the ensemble sitcom she has now filmed.

Meemaw therefore represents a bid to re-establish Barr as the centre of a scripted family comedy, following other work since her ABC departure.

For prospective viewers, the remaining practical question is where and when they can watch it. Filming has finished, but a confirmed release announcement has yet to follow.
