Arsenal's search for a new goalkeeper is set to continue after Borussia Monchengladbach number one Marc-Andre Ter Stegen rejected the advances the of the north London club.

The 21 year old has already been capped twice by Germany and is viewed as the natural successor to Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer after asserting himself as the number one at Monchengladbach.

Ter Stegen has repeatedly been likened to German superstar Oliver Kahn and has attracted interest from several clubs around Europe. However, according to the Daily Mirror, he will only leave the German club in order to join Spanish champions Barcelona.

Reports state that Ter Stegen has rejected the advances of Arsenal and Inter Milan as he is holding out for a move to the Catalan club who are in the market for a new goalkeeper.

With Victor Valdes refusing to sign a new contract it is expected that the Spain international will be sold in the summer so that Barcelona do not lose him on a free when his deal expires in 12 months time.

Barcelona are believed to be interested in signing Ter Stegen, who came through the ranks at Monchengladbach and has quickly established himself as the club's number one, and one of the most exciting prospects in German football.

Having rebuffed Arsenal it seems Arsene Wenger will now have to look elsewhere and he may decide to try and convince Valdes to make the move to the Premier League.

Arsenal have been consistently linked with the Barcelona keeper since he announced that he would not be signing a new deal earlier this year.

Wenger is looking for a established stopper who can help Wojciech Szczesny develop and Valdes would certainly fill that role, having won numerous trophies with Barcelona throughout his 11 year senior career at the club.

The 31 year old has previously admitted that he would be interested in playing in England and would almost certainly prefer to be at a Champions League club, something that Arsenal will be able to offer him.
