Patrick Mahomes Pregame Shot Sparks Wild Vodka Rumours Uncovering Extreme Anti-Cramp Locker Room Rituals
The Chiefs quarterback's long-standing anti-cramp routine was mistaken for alcohol

Patrick Mahomes sparked a bizarre social media frenzy before the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Indianapolis Colts after cameras appeared to catch the quarterback taking a shot from a small bottle. The unusual pregame moment quickly led some fans to speculate that Mahomes was drinking vodka or another alcoholic drink before taking the field.
The reality was considerably less dramatic. Mahomes was drinking pickle juice, a long-running pregame habit associated with the Chiefs and a drink he has previously discussed as part of his routine for dealing with cramps.
The moment nevertheless went viral, showing how quickly an innocent-looking locker-room ritual can become an internet conspiracy when captured without context.
Did Patrick Mahomes Really Take a Shot of Vodka?
The small bottle and yellowish liquid certainly looked unusual on camera, particularly because Mahomes appeared to knock it back in one go.
That was enough for social media users to start joking that the quarterback was taking a vodka shot before a Sunday night game. One viral post showing the footage racked up more than a million views, helping fuel the speculation.
But reports identifying the drink as pickle juice quickly put the alcohol theory to rest. Rather than preparing for the game with liquor, Mahomes was following a routine he has reportedly used for years.
Why Does Mahomes Drink Pickle Juice Before Games?
Pickle juice has become associated with athletes looking for ways to deal with muscle cramps, largely because of its sodium content and the possibility that its strong taste may trigger neurological responses involved in cramp relief.
Mahomes has previously explained that he started drinking pickle juice in high school and described it as something he takes like a small shot. He has also said he believed the practice was connected to preventing cramps, although he admitted he was not entirely sure how it worked.
That makes the bizarre-looking bottle far less mysterious than the viral footage initially suggested.
The Chiefs Have Their Own Anti-Cramp Routine
The pickle juice habit also reflects a broader sporting tradition of athletes experimenting with unconventional methods to avoid cramping during intense competition.
NFL players regularly deal with significant physical demands, particularly during games played in challenging conditions. Hydration, electrolyte intake and preparation are therefore important parts of game-day routines.
For Mahomes, however, the pickle juice has become something of a personal ritual.
The fact that he has been doing it since before his NFL career also makes it difficult to describe the moment as some sudden reaction to his physical condition.
Mahomes Was Coming Off a Major Injury
The timing of the viral clip also made the speculation more intriguing because Mahomes had recently returned from a lengthy recovery following a torn ACL.
Heading into the Colts game, the quarterback was still being watched closely after spending roughly nine months recovering. His pregame preparation therefore attracted additional attention from fans eager to see how he would perform.
Whatever concerns viewers may have had about the mystery drink, Mahomes ultimately produced a spectacular performance.
Mahomes' 'Shot' Came Before a Wild Chiefs Win
The Chiefs defeated the Colts 33-30 in overtime, with Mahomes completing 32 of 47 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns. He also helped set up Harrison Butker's decisive 40-yard field goal in overtime.
That performance made the vodka theory look even more absurd in hindsight.
Instead of stumbling onto the field after an apparent alcoholic pregame shot, Mahomes had simply knocked back a familiar pickle-juice remedy before helping Kansas City secure a dramatic victory.
