Tyson Bagent Says 'Ready to Roll' as Bears Await Word on Caleb Williams' Hamstring Injury After Vikings Loss
Bagent says he is ready to step in after Williams left Chicago's 9-3 defeat by Minnesota and was unable to return

Tyson Bagent is set to lead the Chicago Bears indefinitely after Caleb Williams suffered a non-contact hamstring injury during Chicago's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field in Week 2. Williams left the game and did not return, leaving Bagent and head coach Ben Johnson to address the team's next steps.
The news came after a difficult outing for Chicago, which lost to Minnesota in what Sports Illustrated described as a sloppy effort. Despite losing Williams, neither Bagent nor Johnson focused on the setback when discussing the challenge ahead and instead looked towards Week 3.
'I called plays for him all preseason, so we'll be fine,' Johnson said after the game.
Bagent was equally direct when discussing his opportunity to step in. 'I feel great,' he said. 'I feel like I have a good team around me, good coaching staff, so I'm ready to roll.'
Tyson Bagent's 2026 Preseason Offers Some Context
For context, Bagent has recent film from the 2026 preseason that Johnson can examine as the Bears adjust to life without Williams. The quarterback played in Chicago's preseason opener and finale, completing 29 of 39 pass attempts for 377 yards and three touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans.
Chicago won both of those games. Against Tennessee, Bagent completed 16 of 17 passes, although the SI report notes that the preseason remains an important qualification when assessing what that performance means for the regular season.
Bagent also had a pair of three-and-outs to begin the game against Cleveland, meaning his preseason work was not flawless. Still, the report points to Chicago's 34-10 victory over Tennessee in late August as evidence that Bagent was capable of keeping the offence on schedule.
The change at quarterback is expected to require adjustments from Johnson. The SI report describes Bagent as a much slower quarterback than Williams, with significantly less arm strength, and says Johnson will need to pivot towards a more scripted offence featuring three-step drops and short routes.
The running game could also become more important. Johnson will have to find a way to keep it dynamic without the same threat at quarterback, while Week 3 brings another tactical challenge in the form of Vic Fangio. The SI report says Fangio will know to load the box, slow Chicago's running threats and force Bagent to throw.
Ben Johnson Faces A Major Test With Chicago Bears
Johnson's experience provides some context for the challenge. He coached Jared Goff with the Lions as Dan Campbell's offensive coordinator before arriving in Chicago with Williams entering his second year.
Bagent will be Johnson's third full-time starter at quarterback, according to the SI report. That makes the coming stretch an important test of how Johnson adapts his offence around a different type of quarterback.
The immediate task is straightforward. Bagent must take over the offence while Williams is sidelined, and Johnson must adjust the system around him.
For now, both are presenting the same message. The Bears have lost their starting quarterback, but Bagent believes the players and coaching staff around him are enough to keep moving forward.
'I'm ready to roll.'
