Overview

Arsenal comes into the first game of the 2014/15 Premier League season in a buoyant mood after a morale boosting 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield. Despite a mixed pre-season, the Gunners ended it on a high with a convincing win over the reigning English champions.

The Gunners will hope to get off to a better start than last season, when Aston Villa beat them at home on the opening day. Arsene Wenger will have to make do with out his German stars, who have not returned to complete fitness, after beginning training only five days back.

Crystal Palace

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace were one of the stand-out teams of last season, after they miraculously survived the drop even though they were bottom of the league at the start of December.

Tony Pulis' arrival saw the start of the revival, which saw them record some impressive victories over Chelsea and Everton which saw them finish the season just out of the top half in 11th place.

The Eagles have had a relatively successful pre-season, which saw them win three of their six matches and lose only one.

The corresponding fixture between these two sides last season ended in a 2-0 victory for the Gunners at the Emirates.

What Managers Say

Arsene Wenger (Arsenal): "What makes me positive is the fact that we maintained our technical stability from last season. We managed to maintain too what was our strength last year - a positive spirit and a good togetherness. Also we could strengthen our squad with players like Debuchy, Chambers and [Alexis] Sanchez. All that together makes me confident."

Keith Millen (Caretaker manager - Crystal Palace): "We always knew it was going to be a tough game going to Arsenal first game of the season but it is one we are looking forward to.I need to remind them what a good pre-season we have had and get them looking forward to the game again. We are not going to change. We are ready, prepared for the game and I have just got to try to settle them down and get them ready."
