Jack Wilshere believes that Arsenal's impressive start to the season is down to a strong mentality and togetherness within the squad.

The Gunners have picked up three wins from their opening four league games, including an impressive performance in beating north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at the Emirates.

But it is Arsenal's away form that has been perhaps most impressive as a 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light meant that Arsene Wenger's side secured their seventh consecutive win on the road.

Arsenal now sit top of the league and Wilshere believes that his teammates have grown closer thanks to their superb run last season that saw them finish above Tottenham to secure fourth place.

"I think we've carried that on from last season," Wilshere told the club's official website. "There was a mentality at the end of last season where we had to win games. We had to get that fourth spot.

"We've carried that on into this season so far, especially with the away results. We seem to play really well away from home and hopefully we can take that form into the home games now as well.

"We all get on really well here. We've got a great set of lads and we've been together for four or five years now, most of us. We're starting to build a real friendship and I think that's shown on the pitch."

Wilshere's fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey has hit the headlines thanks to his super performances this season, while the addition of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid has created a buzz around the Emirates.

The German international made his debut in the win over Sunderland and Wilshere is impressed with how quickly he has adapted to life in the Premier League.

"He's a top quality player," Wilshere added. "We play football and he's going to fit in. He's shown that after one game.

"There's a lot more to come from him and if he can stay fit and get in that position a lot more, if we can get him on the ball behind their midfield, he's going to cause the opposition a big problem and he showed that today."
