Wenger says Arsenal is hopeful new signings will be made.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident new signings will be made despite the summer transfer window having just a week to run.

Wenger has made just one signing in the off-season in the form of Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre much to frustration of Gunners supporters.

The French boss is targeting as many as three new players during the remainder of the window, but despite being recently linked with moves for Real Madrid pair Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria, Wenger says there is nothing to report.

"I don't know," Wenger said when asked about interest in Benzema and Di Maria. "I can't tell you that. I will not give you any names because it would be unfair on players and create some wrong hopes.

"Many of the disputes around the county is because managers say players names. Most important thing is what happens.

"I have no idea, I have no fixed date. We have no fixed number but I believe that the most important is to focus on the squad we have.

"I am guided by my conscientiousness. I think the players we have, they are special and if I want to add something it has be special. I still am optimistic."

Arsenal bounced back from their opening day defeat to Aston Villa with successive wins over Fenerbahce in the Champions League play-off first-leg and then Fulham in the Premier League.

Injuries to Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby leaves Wenger short particularly in midfield in the early weeks of the season, but the form of Lukas Podolski and Oliver Giroud, who have two and three goals respectively already this term, is encouraging.

"By scoring goals they are proving a point and by being efficiently defensively they are proving a point," Wenger added. "What people are worried about Podolski can play upfront, as can Walcott?

"Overall they are doing well. Look I always said season starts transfer window should be closed."
