Australia have beaten England by three wickets with just one ball to spare to reach the final of the one-day Tri Series in Hobart.

Captain Steve Smith struck 102 and finished the afternoon unbeaten to inspire his side to victory.

England set a target of 304 with Ian Bell (141) hitting a fine century to become England's top ODI run-scorer, while Moeen Ali also hit an impressive 46.

Bell took three wickets as the tourists set about reducing Australia but Aaron Finch (32), Shaun Marsh (45) and James Faulkner (35) helped set up a thrilling finale when Brad Haddin went for 42 off Chris Woakes' delivery.

England took further hope when Moises Henriques went out for four inside the final over but with two balls remaining, Mitchell Starc entered the fray to hit a winning single.

The defeat on Friday 23 January does not completely rule Eoin Morgan's side out of the pre-World Cup competition, with the meeting between Australia and India on 26 January set to decide who joins the hosts in the final.
