Batman v Superman was announced amid great excitement at the 2013 Comic-Con by director Zack Snyder. It was also indicated that the film will be based on Frank Miller's popular graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns.
The following excerpt was read from the book during the film's announcement:
"I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat," Harry Lennix (who plays General Swanwick) read to the audience as a combined Batman and Superman logo appeared onscreen. "I want you to remember the one man who beat you."
However, Snyder stated that they weren't doing a straight-up adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns (TDKR) but that the new Superman-Batman film would draw heavily from the comic.
So what key plot points from the comic will Snyder use for the film? Moviepilot posted a report speculating which plot details of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might be based on TDKR. Here's an analysis of some key moments that could feature in the film.
1. Superman works for the government - Although he made it quite clear to General Swanwick in Man of Steel that he's "here to help" but on his "own terms", Superman might be seen (initially) as the government's pet muscle (as depicted in the comics).
2. Battle scene between Batman and Superman – One of the high points of the comic was the iconic battle between Batman and Superman. Now, post the 2014 Comic-Con teaser of the film, we all know that the movie will definitely feature that epic battle sequence. But how does Batman even stand a chance against the Man of Steel? Does he use Kryptonite?
3. Robin cameo – It is possible that the film could feature or subtly hint at Robin's role who in the book is a young girl called Carrie Kelley who later becomes Batman's sidekick.
Batman v Superman is set to be released in March 2016.
