In anticipation of having Ben Wheatley's crime dramedy Free Fire close the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday 16 October, StudioCanal have released not one, not two, but 10 character posters ahead of the gala event. In the new artwork, stars Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson expectedly take centre stage with their brightly-coloured figures providing the backdrop for a set of targets. Quite appropriate given the subject matter of the film, don't you think...
Written by Amy Jump and Wheatley and directed by the latter, the film takes place in Boston, Massachusetts in the late 1970s where a woman named Justine (Larson) brokers a meeting between two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley) and arms traffickers Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and Ord (Hammer) in order for the former duo to buy a stash of guns the shifty businessmen are trying to... well, shift. However, it doesn't take long for the rendezvous in a deserted warehouse to go south and soon everybody finds themselves in one hell of a shoot-out and tasked with fighting for their lives.
The posters certainly take inspiration from the movie's time-setting, complete with an uncoloured, 3D-style lettering and an overall minimalist design. Each image introduces the viewer to the depicted actor's character name and it also appears that they have old-school shooting range scorecards in various corners, in keeping with the storyline. Heck, if the trailer's anything to go by, they all get a shot in! Who knows who will come out 'victorious' by the end of the film!
Also starring Jack Reynor (Sing Street), Noah Taylor (Edge Of Tomorrow), Enzo Cilenti (Game Of Thrones), Babou Ceesay (National Treasure) and Sam Riley (Pride And Prejudice And Zombies), Free Fire will be released in UK cinemas on 31 March 2017. At the moment, there is no set date as to when it will reach big screens in the US.
