Bryon Noem

For over three decades, Bryon Noem stood quietly in the background of his wife's political rise — attending hearings, appearing at campaign events, and absorbing what relatives describe as years of private humiliation over her alleged affair with political adviser Corey Lewandowski. But the moment that may have finally cracked his resolve did not unfold behind closed doors. It happened in a congressional chamber on Capitol Hill, in front of cameras, with his wife unable to offer a flat denial.

Members of Bryon Noem's extended family told the New York Post that the South Dakota businessman, a devout Christian, had long believed it was his 'calling from God' to stand by Kristi Noem regardless of the personal cost. But following the House Judiciary Committee hearing on 4 March 2026—where Democratic Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove directly asked Kristi Noem whether she had 'sexual relations' with Lewandowski, and Kristi did not deny it—those same relatives say they are watching closely for signs that he has reached his limit.

'He Said It Was His Calling From God'

'He said he decided about 20 years ago that it was his calling from God to support her in whatever she decided to do,' one family member said. 'So he has put up with the humiliation. We will see if he sticks with her now.' The same relative added: 'I think it's him honouring the calling from God. But it seems like there would be some limit to that.'

Bryon Noem had been present in the chamber during the early part of the hearing. Kristi Noem publicly acknowledged his attendance in her opening remarks, saying he would 'have to go catch a flight in a few hours'. He had already left the room by the time Kamlager-Dove posed her question. Kristi Noem responded by calling the line of questioning 'tabloid garbage', but did not deny the relationship. Sources close to the White House said that proved to be the 'final straw' for President Donald Trump, who fired her the following day.

'She Despises the Noem Family'

A second relative said tensions between Kristi Noem and her husband's family had simmered for years, and that many of them had long been aware of the alleged relationship with Lewandowski. 'She despises the Noem family,' the relative said. Another family member said the public nature of the grilling was what made it especially difficult to watch. 'What gets me is she couldn't say no,' the relative said. 'When she's getting grilled about it, she couldn't say no.'

Bryon Noem and Kristi Noem have been married since May 1992. The couple, who share three children—Kassidy, Kennedy, and Booker—built a life together on a ranch near Castlewood, South Dakota, later expanding into other ventures including an insurance company, a hunting lodge, and a family restaurant. Kristi Noem has frequently cited her husband's steadiness as central to her ability to pursue a political career, publicly crediting him with managing their household while she focused on public office.

Rumours That Followed the Pair for Years

The affair allegations first surfaced publicly in September 2021, when reports emerged that Noem was in a romantic relationship with Lewandowski, who had served as Donald Trump's 2016 campaign manager before being dismissed. Kristi Noem denied the claims at the time, calling them 'a disgusting lie.' Further reports followed in September 2023, which Noem's spokesman also denied. By September 2025, reporting indicated that the alleged relationship was ongoing and that Lewandowski had taken on a significant role running operations at the Department of Homeland Security as a 'special government employee.'

Kamlager-Dove cited those national security concerns explicitly during her questioning, telling colleagues that Noem had given Lewandowski 'unprecedented power' at a department 'charged with keeping Americans safe.' Lewandowski had reportedly been involved in reviewing government contracts at DHS, a role that drew scrutiny from multiple lawmakers across party lines.

Faith, Family, and the Limits of Loyalty

Relatives said they hoped the public spectacle would force Bryon Noem to confront the situation clearly. 'I actually liked that he sat behind her while she was grilled,' one family member said. 'I think he's ignored the reality. Maybe he has to face it now.' Another relative said his faith and closeness to his children would ultimately keep the marriage together. 'Bryon is a Christian man, and he believes that marriage is forever,' the relative said. 'He's very close with his children. I'm sure this is really hard on them.'

Bryon Noem did not respond to requests for comment. Kristi Noem is expected to leave her DHS post at the end of March 2026 and has since been reassigned to the role of Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas—widely described as a downgrade from leading an agency of a quarter-million staff. Trump has named Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as her replacement, pending Senate confirmation. Her dismissal marks the first Cabinet departure of Trump's second term, raising direct questions about conflicts of interest at DHS, the allocation of public funds, and the judgement of a Cabinet secretary whose non-denial before a live committee hearing ultimately proved politically fatal.
