A mother who claimed that a Primark security guard snatched her baby and ordered her out of the store because she was breastfeeding has admitted to lying.

Appearing at Leicester Crown Court, Caroline Starmer, 28, pleaded guilty to a charge of intent to pervert the course of justice. In July, the mother of four of Marshall Street, Woodgate, Leicester, published a series of Facebook posts alleging that she was assaulted by a male security guard as she fed her nine-month-old daughter, Paige, at the clothing retailer's Humberstone Gate store.

The story was widely published in the media. Starmer will be sentenced on 3 December and was warned that she could face a jail sentence.

"This is a very serious matter. The court will consider a custodial sentence," Judge Simon Hammond told Starmer.

Starmer refused to comment outside court.
