Overview

England managed a victory in the first Test at Lord's, despite having a difficult start in the first innings as they lost the first four wickets with just 30 runs on the board. It was Joe Root's 98 and Ben Stokes' 92, and a partnership from Moeen Ali and Jos Butler that helped the hosts post a first innings total of 389.

In reply, New Zealand managed 523 runs and had a comfortable lead. The Three Lions scored 478 runs and skipper Alastair Cook's 169 runs helped England post that total. He was well supported by Stokes, who also went to score a century in the second innings.

The Black Caps suffered an early blow as they lost three wickets before lunch on the final day. Stuart Broad and Stokes took three wickets each and the latter's all round performance helped England seal a 124-run victory in the first Test.

New Zealand will be looking to bounce back in Leeds to level the series. England will be confident that irrespective of a result in the second Test, they will not lose the two-match Test series.
