ICE Agent Salary Explained: Pay, Benefits, and the Federal Agency's $30 Billion Budget Surge
ICE agents are paid under the US federal General Schedule system, with base salaries typically ranging from about $50,000 to over $80,000

Pay and benefits for agents at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have come under renewed scrutiny following a significant increase in funding for the agency under recent federal legislation.
ICE plays a central role in immigration enforcement in the United States, and its staffing levels, remuneration and resources have long been politically contentious. Attention has intensified as the agency prepares to expand recruitment and operational capacity.
Under legislation approved by Congress in 2025, ICE has been allocated close to $30bn (about £22bn) in additional funding spread over several years for enforcement, staffing and operational costs. The scale of the increase has prompted criticism from civil rights groups and concern from some lawmakers about oversight and accountability.
How ICE Agent Pay Is Structured
ICE agents are federal employees and are paid under the US General Schedule pay system, which applies across government departments. Law enforcement roles receive additional pay enhancements to reflect operational demands and availability requirements.
Entry-level deportation officers typically start on lower General Schedule grades, with base salaries ranging from around $50,000 to more than $80,000 a year (£36,000 to £58,000), depending on grade, experience and location. Pay increases with seniority and promotion.
JUST IN: The U.S. House has passed the final FY2026 spending package totaling ~$1.2 trillion, including a standalone $64.4 billion bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that secures $10 billion for ICE amid ongoing mass deportation operations.

Agents may also receive locality pay in higher-cost areas, as well as overtime and law enforcement availability pay. In some cases, total annual compensation can exceed six figures, depending on hours worked and role responsibilities.
Bonuses And Recruitment Incentives
ICE has introduced financial incentives aimed at attracting new recruits as part of wider hiring efforts. These include signing bonuses that have been advertised at up to $50,000 for certain roles and locations.
Agents may also be eligible for student loan repayment schemes and other federal incentives that apply across law enforcement agencies. Overtime and premium pay opportunities tend to increase during periods of heightened enforcement activity.
The US Office of Personnel Management has approved special salary rate adjustments for some federal law enforcement roles from 2026, providing an additional uplift above standard annual pay increases.

Benefits Available To ICE Agents
As federal employees, ICE agents have access to a standard package of government benefits. These include health, dental and vision insurance through the Federal Employees Health Benefits programme, as well as participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.
Retirement provision includes Social Security, a government-backed pension and the Thrift Savings Plan, which operates in a similar way to a private-sector pension scheme. Paid annual leave, sick leave, public holidays and life insurance options are also available.
Budget Expansion And Political Debate
The expansion of ICE pay and recruitment has been enabled by a significant increase in funding approved by Congress. Legislative summaries show that ICE's enforcement and operational budget has risen sharply compared with previous years, allowing the agency to increase staffing and activity.
Supporters of the funding increase argue it strengthens border enforcement and public safety. Critics, including civil rights organisations and some Democratic lawmakers, have raised concerns about the scale of the funding and the impact of expanded enforcement.

Not only should ICE receive NO funding, it should be abolished.
Two people would still be alive in Minnesota if not for the interference with law enforcement. I blame the protesters and @GovTimWalz for those two deaths. pic.twitter.com/hZHvd5RY9J

Comparison With Other Federal Agencies
In pay and benefits terms, ICE agents are broadly comparable with other US federal law enforcement roles, including those at the FBI, the US Marshals Service and Customs and Border Protection.
The expanded budget places immigration enforcement among the better-funded areas of US domestic security policy. Debate over ICE's role, funding and accountability is expected to continue as recruitment and enforcement activity increase.
