'Vote With Confidence': Elon Musk Is Allegedly Stealing Your Personal Data for Advertising Firms

Elon Musk's America PAC is facing fresh scrutiny in the United States after a report on Tuesday alleged that its Vote Safe website collects extensive voter data while promoting itself as a tool to help people 'vote with confidence'.

Under the site's privacy policy, certain categories of personal information may be shared with or sold to business partners for targeted marketing, where permitted by law.

The allegation centres on information gathered from visitors to Vote Safe, including names, dates of birth, home addresses, email addresses, mobile numbers, IP addresses, browser details, location, voter registration status and district.

The report also said the site records links clicked and pages viewed, allowing it to record interactions alongside other user information.

Elon Musk's Vote Safe Data Collection Draws Scrutiny

The Vote Safe campaign is being promoted as America PAC prepares for the 2026 midterm elections.

According to a report by Judd Legum in Popular Information, the political action committee has spent more than £132,800 ($180,000) advertising the site during the past week.

Vote Safe presents election-related information and directs users towards registration and voting resources.

The report, however, focuses on what happens to information supplied or generated during a visit. It says the site's data practices extend beyond contact details to include browsing activity and 'inferences' made from information about users.

That distinction matters because the website's privacy policy has changed. The earlier version reportedly barred America PAC from sharing personal information with advertisers, political organisations or other third parties. That language was removed when the policy was updated on 29 August.

Elon Musk's America PAC Broadens Privacy Terms

Under the revised terms, America PAC says it may sell or share certain personal information with its 'business partners'. Separately, Popular Information said its technical analysis identified data flows involving Facebook, Google, X, The Trade Desk, Incrementdata and Iterable.

The wording does not establish that every category of collected information has been sold or transferred to every listed partner. It does, however, broaden the circumstances in which the PAC says information may be shared.

Musk authorised America PAC to spend between $100 million and $120 million on its midterm programme. His political operation is again expected to use door knocking, direct mail and digital advertising as part of its election work.

Elon Musk's America PAC Has Faced Similar Questions Before

The latest scrutiny follows questions over America PAC's voter outreach ahead of the November 2024 presidential election.

At the time, America PAC had spent more than $800,000 (£590,200) on digital advertisements since early June, targeting voters in key battleground states, according to contemporaneous reporting.

In some states, users reported that a website promoted as a voter registration service collected their information without ultimately directing them to complete registration. No court finding of unlawful conduct is cited in connection with that episode.

America PAC also faced criticism in Georgia over partially pre-filled absentee ballot applications sent to residents. The source says the Georgia State Elections Board voted to issue a formal letter of reprimand after finding that the mailings violated state law.

The PAC is now returning to midterm campaign activity despite Musk previously saying he intended to step back from political spending.

Its renewed programme is expected to combine field organising, direct mail and digital advertising as the 3 November elections approach, with Vote Safe forming part of that digital push to reach and identify voters.
