Apple's iPhone 4S has turned out to be an amazing smartphone, thanks to the Retina Display, dual-core processor and iSight camera. And, of course, the popular voice-activated personal assistant Siri (even though it is still on its Beta version).

Taiwanese competitor HTC unveiled its One series of Android smartphones at the Mobile World Congress which includes HTC One S. It is the thinnest in the range and features Beats Audio which promises a richer and realistic sound experience. In addition, users can fully get access to 25GB of Dropbox space for free for two years.

So, if you are considering buying a new smartphone, which of these two should you go for? We put them both through their paces to see how they stack up:

The HTC One S has a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. It incorporates HTC Sense 4.0 user interface over Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass which protects the screen from daily wear and tear.

In comparison, the iPhone 4S touts an LED-backlit capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels. The device also includes Corning Gorilla Glass as well as a fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating.

The HTC One S is powered by a 1.5GHz Krait dual-core CPU and Qualcomm MSM8260A Snapdragon chipset which offers a smooth experience to the users. It includes Adreno 225 which offers support to powerful graphics.

In contrast, the iPhone 4S is powered by a 1GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core CPU and Apple A5 chipset. The chipset provides up to seven times faster graphics handling and is believed to offer gaming enthusiasts a very rich experience, supported by a PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.

Both, the HTC One S and the iPhone 4S boast an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. The sporting features are auto-focus, LED flash, geo-tagging and face and smile detection. The smartphones offer video recording of 1080p with video stabilisation as well as a VGA secondary camera.

Operating System

The HTC smartphone runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) which features multitasking, rich notifications, resizable widgets and new lock screen actions.

The iPhone 4S runs on iOS 5 operating system which can now be upgraded to iOS 5.1 platform. The upgrade is expected to have fixed several prior issues which include battery bugs and loss of audio quality.

The HTC One S comprises 16GB internal storage and 1GB RAM. The smartphone lacks a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The iPhone 4S has internal storage options of 16/32/64GB and does not offer a microSD card.

The HTC smartphone comes with Li-Ion 1650mAh standard battery. It allows a talk time of up to seven hours as well as stand by time of up to 430 hours.

In comparison, the iPhone 4S contains Li-Ion 1432mAh standard battery which allows for stand by time of up to 200 hours on 2G and 3G networks. It offers talk time of up to 14 hours on 2G and eight hours on 3G networks.
