Independence Day 2 title revealed 20th Century Fox

Independence Day 2 now has an official title and a synopsis. 20th Century Fox revealed, at a press conference in Albuquerque, that the much-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster will be titled - Independence Day: Resurgence.

The movie's first official synopsis reads:

"We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

Resurgence will be set 20 years post the events of the first movie. "We call it in the film the War of '96," director Roland Emmerich explained. "It's like a post-World generation that's unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's resurgence." (via The Independent)

Emmerich was joined on stage, at the event, by returning cast members including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch, along with newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.
