Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has fled to an underground bunker in Tehran and handed day-to-day control of Iran to his youngest son, fearing imminent US airstrikes as an American aircraft carrier strike group steams towards the Persian Gulf. The 86-year-old supreme leader moved to a fortified shelter connected to elaborate underground tunnels after senior military officials warned of the increasing likelihood of a US attack.

Masoud Khamenei, 53, has assumed management of the supreme leader's daily responsibilities and is serving as the primary channel for communication with the regime government's executive branches, whilst his father remains in hiding.

Trump Warns of 'Armada' Heading to Middle East

The underground retreat follows President Donald Trump's announcement on Friday that US warships were headed to the Middle East. The US 'has a lot of ships heading towards Iran,' Trump said, adding that he 'hopes we don't have to use them'.

The Pentagon redirected the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group from the South China Sea towards the Middle East, according to US defence officials. The carrier strike group, which includes fighter jets, guided missile destroyers, and at least one attack submarine, is currently travelling from the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf region, with the transit expected to take approximately one week.

Iran Threatens 'All-Out War'

Despite Khamenei's defensive posture, Tehran has publicly refused to back down. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that a US strike on Khamenei 'is tantamount to all-out war against the Iranian nation'.

Iran's national security parliamentary commission declared this week that any attack against Khamenei would trigger a declaration of jihad. Khamenei, who is frequently active on social media, has not posted on X since 17 January, though it is not known precisely when he entered hiding.

Fortified Lavizan Bunker

According to intelligence sources, Khamenei's secret bunker is located in Tehran's Lavizan neighbourhood. The top-secret base is reportedly located at least 90-100 metres underground and is protected by anti-bomb and anti-aircraft systems.

The bunker is believed to be more secure than the underground Fordo nuclear facility, which came under attack from US B-2 Stealth Bombers in June last year. Ayatollah Khamenei, along with his immediate family, has been taken to the bunker and is being guarded by an elite unit.

Pattern of Underground Retreats

This marks at least the second time within a year that the supreme leader has sought refuge in fortified shelters. Khamenei was moved to the underground bunker in Lavizan hours after Israel began attacks on the capital last June.

During the 12-day conflict with Israel, Khamenei reportedly designated a line of succession in case he was killed. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz publicly confirmed that Israel actively sought to assassinate the Iranian supreme leader during the June conflict but couldn't, as he 'went very deep underground'.

Domestic Crisis Compounds Security Fears

The military tensions occur against severe domestic unrest in Iran. Protests against a disastrous economy following the worst drought in decades have rocked the Islamic Republic since late December.

Regime forces have killed at least 3,000 civilians during the protests, with some groups claiming the death toll could be as high as 20,000, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. Khamenei's latest post on X, before going silent, threatened to go after internal and international 'criminals' responsible for the widespread protests.

US Military Buildup Continues

The Pentagon's decision to redirect the Abraham Lincoln represents a significant shift in American naval deployments. The carrier had been operating under US Indo-Pacific Command but is now transiting towards waters under the jurisdiction of US Central Command.

The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group includes the flagship aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) with Carrier Air Wing 9, equipped with F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers. The strike group also includes three guided-missile destroyers with launchers capable of striking targets across Iran.

Understanding the Global Stakes

The standoff carries profound implications beyond the Middle East. Any military confrontation could disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-third of the world's seaborne oil passes daily, sending energy prices soaring and triggering global economic shockwaves.

Iran has warned that any attack on Khamenei would prompt retaliatory strikes against US military installations across the Gulf and potentially Israeli territory, risking wider regional conflict. For ordinary citizens globally, consequences could include higher fuel costs, increased prices for goods, and potential escalation drawing multiple nations into direct conflict.

The combination of an embattled 86-year-old leader hiding underground, massive protests inside Iran, and American carrier strike groups approaching Iranian waters creates a volatile situation where miscalculation could prove catastrophic.
