After 806,000 Opioid Overdose Deaths, Barry Patel and Wade Smith Are Betting on a Different Approach to Pain
FDA-approved non-opioid pain relief for local patients

The opioid crisis did not emerge because medicine lacked alternatives. Effective, FDA-approved, non-opioid options for pain management existed long before opioids dominated the commercial landscape. They were deprioritised during decades when heavily promoted products shaped physicians' prescribing habits across the country. Patients paid the price for that commercial calculus in ways the healthcare system is still working to reverse.
The human toll behind that reckoning is well documented. Roughly 806,000 people in the United States died from an opioid overdose between 1999 and 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the death toll climbing across three distinct waves before falling for the first time since 2018. Prescription opioids drove the earliest of those waves, a stretch when patients in pain had few widely promoted alternatives placed in front of their doctors. That distance between what patients needed and what the market pushed is the space Galt's founders set out to occupy.
Barry Patel and Wade Smith built Galt Pharmaceuticals on the conviction that those neglected options deserved a second chance, delivered through a distribution model that could reach the communities that needed them most. Both founders had spent careers close enough to pharmaceutical and insurance operations to understand which decisions were driven by genuine clinical need and which were driven by economics. When they set out to build something different, they anchored the entire product strategy to a question the industry had largely stopped asking: what do patients with pain actually need, and what safe, FDA-approved options have been systematically underutilised?
Galt Pharmaceuticals acquires and commercialises FDA-approved, non-opioid medications targeting therapeutic areas with documented unmet needs. Products like Norgesic® for musculoskeletal pain and Tolectin® for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis carry decades of clinical validation. None achieved the patient reach they warranted during eras when blockbuster drugs absorbed all available commercial attention. Galt's thesis is that medications with strong safety profiles and clear clinical applications should not languish because of market timing.
Patel has addressed this directly. Revisiting and promoting safe options for pain management that were sidelined during the opioid era is a clinical obligation, not a commercial novelty. Tolectin®DS, launched in 2024 with territories nationwide, targets bone and joint pain in ways that complement the musculoskeletal focus of Norgesic®, giving healthcare providers a broader toolkit for managing patients while expanding treatment options.
The distribution model amplifies that clinical mission. Galt brings medications to market through four channels, the most distinctive being the Galt Phranchise System. Local franchisees engage directly with physicians, building sustained relationships in their communities rather than executing transactional sales calls. When a provider hears from someone they know and trust about an FDA-approved, non-opioid option for a patient who has cycled through inadequate pain management, that conversation carries a weight and persistence that no distant sales operation can manufacture.
The business rationale and the public health rationale converge deliberately. At Galt, they were always designed to be the same thing.
