Kate Winslet is reportedly in negotiations to star in upcoming drama The Mountains Between Us. The picture would see her appear alongside Luther star Idris Elba, who has been attached to the title since February.

Based on the Charles Martin novel of the same name, the story features two plane crash survivors who, despite being strangers, remain together to brave the harsh elements in the mountainous woods of Colorado. Elba is set to appear as Ben Trace, a doctor and avid climber and, if she were to come aboard the project, Winslet would feature as writer Ashley Knox. Through their experiences, the pair develop an intimate bond, even though Ashley is a bride-to-be and Ben is bearing the emotional wounds of separating from his estranged wife.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hany Abu-Assad (The Idol) is currently signed on to direct while Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) will adapt the screenplay. With 20th Century Fox helming the project, filming is set to begin in December on location in British Columbia, Canada.

Production on the movie is reported to have been a tad rocky so far, particularly when it comes to casting. Michael Fassbender and Margot Robbie were originally linked to the project almost three years ago, but when the former was said to have bowed out, he was replaced in the role by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. Robbie later departed, leading Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike to the project. Since then, both Hunnam and Pike have abandoned the film, leaving Elba in the mix to be cast as male lead.

Winslet's involvement is far from confirmed. In the meantime, she will appear on the big screen, in December, in Collateral Beauty with Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Will Smith. Directed by The Devil Wears Prada's David Frankel, the film tells the story of a New York advertising executive who experiences a personal tragedy. The event subsequently forces him into a deep depression, leading his colleagues to resort to an "unconventional plan" to help him get back on track.
