Louis van Gaal

Manchester United fans have reacted positively to news of Louis van Gaal's appointment, saying the Dutchman has the pedigree and credentials to succeed at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal was appointed yesterday as successor to David Moyes, who presided over a disastrous 10 months during which the club dropped out of the Champions League places.

Moyes was widely criticised for his lack of achievements in football, pointing out that he has never won a major trophy as a manager - and many believe van Gaal, with his glittering CV, is the perfect replacement.

One United fan, interviewed outside Old Trafford yesterday, described the announcement as "brilliant", adding that "the partnership between Louis van Gaal and Manchester United is sure to put United back on the pedestal of European glory, a place where the club deserves to be."

This sentiment was generally shared among other United fans, with many citing van Gaal's international respect, and the involvement of Ryan Giggs, as positive factors.

However one fan did strike a note of caution, saying "well we thought David Moyes was the right man last year so...."

Van Gaal has won the domestic league in Holland, Spain and Germany, and lifted the Champions League trophy with Ajax in 1995.
