With the coronation of 13th Miss Earth just hours away, the countdown to the crowning has begun.

The Miss Earth 2013 pageant is taking place at the Versailles Palace in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines on 7 December at 8 pm PHT (12 pm GMT).

A total of 89 contestants are representing their countries at the coveted pageant which every year chooses a role model dedicated to upholding the advocacy to preserve and restore Mother Earth.

The reigning Miss Earth 2012, Tereza Fajksová of Czech Republic will crown her successor at the end of the pageant, which will also award three contestants the titles of Miss Air, Miss Water, and Miss Fire. Miss Earth 2013 will serve as the ambassador for environmental protection campaigns worldwide.

As part of the pageant, the contestants attended various environmental seminars, took part in planting trees and educated people on the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

This year's Miss Earth competition focuses on eco-tourism and its contribution to the Philippines's efforts in alleviating poverty, according to the organisers.

Miss Earth 2013 Hosts

British and American hosts are set to make Miss Earth 2013 competition a memorable event. The award winning television host, Oli Pettigrew, will join American-born and Singapore-based fashion model, Linda Black, on stage in the night gala.

David Pomeranz, American singer, composer, lyricist, and writer for musical theatre, is the guest performer at the finale.

The Miss Earth pageant was launched in 2001 to have its candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of Mother Earth. So far the pageant has seen winners from India, Philippines, Ecuador, Venezuela, Canada, Chile, Honduras, Kenya and Denmark each and two from Brazil.

Miss Earth 2013 is the last leg of beauty pageants for the year following the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants held in September and November respectively.
