Oregon School Shooter, 16, Blasted Through Locked Doors Before Killing Four in Terrifying Security Breach
The 16-year-old reportedly breached a locked entrance before being shot by an armed civilian

A teenage gunman who killed three children and a teacher at an Oregon primary school gained entry by firing at locked doors, according to police.
The 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday, 15 October, before being shot by a community member who followed him inside, according to police. Authorities said the attacker had used his firearm to gain entry through a locked door.
The first emergency call was received at 12:59pm, with officers arriving at approximately 1:02pm, according to the reported timeline. Four people were killed, while two others sustained life-threatening injuries. It remains unclear whether the school's entrances had security measures beyond standard locks.
Gunman Used Firearm To Breach Locked School Door
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager fired at a locked door to gain entry to the school. Although the entrances were secured, they did not prevent the armed suspect from gaining access.
Authorities have not specified which entrance was breached, how many doors were damaged or whether the attacker encountered any additional barriers after getting inside.
The first warning came from someone sitting in a vehicle outside the school who reported being targeted by an individual carrying a long gun. Emergency operators subsequently received numerous calls indicating that the suspect had entered the building.
Police issued an alert to responding officers at approximately 1pm, and the school initiated lockdown procedures one minute later. 'An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school, and pursued him into the school and engaged him,' Krantz said.
Three Children and a Teacher Killed in School Shooting
Those killed included three pupils aged five, eight and 11 and a teacher whose age was not immediately disclosed. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to St Charles Medical Center in Bend with life-threatening injuries. Authorities withheld the victims' names pending notification of their families.
Silver Rail Elementary serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade and had 459 pupils enrolled during the previous academic year. Situated in a residential neighbourhood in Bend, the school became the scene of a major emergency response as police secured the grounds and searched classrooms following the shooting.
Armed Bystander Stopped Teenage Attacker
The violence ended when an unidentified civilian followed the gunman into the school and shot him. According to Krantz, the individual had witnessed the suspect entering the premises and pursued him before confronting him inside. Officers arriving at approximately 1:02pm subsequently learned that the attacker had been shot.
Police have not identified the civilian or explained their connection to the school. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the intervention, acknowledging both the lives potentially saved and the emotional consequences of confronting an armed teenager. Investigators have also not disclosed precisely where inside the building the confrontation occurred.
Bend-La Pine Schools cancelled Friday's classes and sporting activities as families mourned the victims. Surviving pupils were taken to a nearby church to be reunited with their relatives, while residents gathered for a candlelight vigil. School officials expressed their grief and prioritised supporting affected children, staff and families following the tragedy.
