Pope Francis' official five-day state visit to the US is well underway and he has been warmly welcomed by President Barack Obama. In his capacity as pontiff, Pope Francis also delivered the first-ever address to a joint session of the US Congress in which he urged lawmakers to open their hearts to new generations of immigrants and said that they must be viewed "with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated".

During his visit, the pope touched on economic inequality and ending the death penalty in the US. He also delivered a tough message on climate change in which he supported Obama's plan to cut carbon emissions and labelled his efforts "encouraging".

At a welcoming ceremony, the 78-year-old Catholic leader said: "It seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our common home, we are living at a critical moment of history."

Today (24 September), the pope will travel onwards to New York and tomorrow (25 September), he will address the UN General Assembly. He will then conduct a religious service at the site of the World Trade Center before an evening mass at Madison Square Garden.
