Princes William and Harry got their hands dirty on 23 August as they helped out on a building site to turn a derelict street into homes for veterans. The royal brothers, who donned hard hats and high-visibility jackets, were appearing in an episode of the BBC show DIY SOS, joining hundreds of volunteers and builders.

William helped DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles paint a wall, while Harry teased builders as he helped lay paving stones. "Come on get a grip," he said to his workmate, as he mocked his building abilities.

On the once derelict street in Manchester, eight buildings are to be renovated and 62 house facades improved.

A support centre run by charities Walking With The Wounded and the Royal British Legion will help ex-soldiers deal with physical and mental health issues and offer retraining.
