Overview

Nadal embarks on his quest to lift the Monte-Carlo Masters title for the ninth time with a second round clash against Gabashvili.

The Spaniard had previously won the tournament for a record eight consecutive times from 2005 to 2012. But last year the 27-year-old was denied his ninth straight victory in the final by World No 2, Novak Djokovic.

Entering directly into the round of 32 with a bye in the previous round, Nadal is certainly one of the favourites to win the title in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin this year.

Meanwhile, Gabashvili who came through the qualifiers secured his progress into the second round after beating Simon Gilles on Tuesday in a match that lasted two hours and 43 minutes..

The Russian fell, 4-6, in the first set, but bounced back to clinch the subsequent sets, 6-4, 6-4, denying the 29-year-old Frenchman a victory on home soil.

The one who emerges triumphant between Nadal and Gabashvili will take on the winner of the clash between Pablo Andujar and Andreas Seppi in the third round.

Head-to-Head

Nadal holds a 3-0 lead over Gabashvili in overall meetings.

The pair have clashed twice in Grand Slam events and the Spaniard has emerged victorious on both occasions.
