Russia would accept either money or the delivery of the two warships that France has delayed, according to a Kremlin official.

Under pressure from the United States and its allies in the European Union, France suspended the delivery of a Mistral warship to Russia, over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis.

French President Francois Hollande last month said Paris would block the delivery indefinitely.

"Both options will suit us – either the ships or the money. The money spent must be recovered," the Kremlin's foreign policy aide said following talks between Hollande and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US and EU has accused Russia of fuelling the conflict in eastern Ukraine, by providing weapons and manpower to the pro-Russian rebels that have seized key cities and surrounding areas.

Russia has denied any involvement in the conflict.
