Overview

India's highest-rated boxer in the All International Boxing Association (AIBA) list and World Championship bronze medallist Shiva Thapa starts his campaign on 11 August with the weight of the entire nation on his shoulders.

Shiva, who was the youngest boxer to have qualified for the London 2012 Olympics, did not have the best of times in his maiden appearance, losing in the first round to Mexico's Oscar Valdez Fierro. Now aged 22, the boxer will look to use that experience and push toward his aim of getting a medal for his country.

India have won only two boxing medals in the Olympics so far, with Vijender Singh winning at the 2008 Beijing Games while MC MaryKom won it at London 2012.

His opponent on the day, defending Olympic and World champion Robeisy Ramirez is one of the biggest stars in the amateur boxing circuit. Following his win at the London 2012 Games, Ramirez has gone from strength to strength and comes into this clash as the definite favourite.

Ramirez will also come into this clash full of confidence, knowing that he outclassed Thapa the last time they faced off, which was five-years ago at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The Cuban won by a comfortable 5-2 margin and will be looking for a repeat performance come 11 August.

The fact that Ramirez is a southpaw makes it easier against Thapa who has an orthodox stance, but considering the leap made by the Indian boxer in recent times means it will be an exciting clash between two boxers who are the future of the sport.
