The Amazing Spider Man 2
Sony Pictures had plans to make The Sinister Six post The Amazing Spider Man 2 amazingspiderman2movie/facebook

Post the crash and burn of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures had all sorts of plans for their treasured but doomed superhero franchise, and that reportedly included a rumoured Aunt May film among other ideas! There was a solo film planned on Venom and also the studio's own Suicide Squadish movie featuring all the Spidey villains -- titled The Sinister Six. But then Marvel came and it all went south.

But now, it looks like The Sinister Six might still have a shot at getting made and with Spider-Man as a lead character, no less. In his recent interview with io9, filmmaker Drew Goddard (writer - The Sinister Six, The Martian) confirmed that it would have been a standalone movie set in The Amazing Spider-Man Universe which would have very much featured Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker in a leading role.

"My vision of that movie was a summer annual," Goddard explained. "So you didn't have to worry about continuity. It was just, 'We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.' I intentionally wanted a movie that didn't have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own."

Goddard then hinted at the possibility of the film fitting into the Marvel Cinematic Universe of which Spider-Man is now a part of. "...So the good news is, you know, it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants," the writer continued. "We just need to let a couple years go by, I think."

While the script would no doubt need to be retooled to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sounds like it could fit into Marvel and Sony's future plans if they're interested. "...I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that's a great thing. I'm on board with that decision because as a fan that's what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you've gotta play the long game," he stated. Marvel's Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, will debut in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War which releases on 6 May 2016.
