Overview

Sri Lanka ended their five-match winless run by defeating England in the first ODI in Colombo on Wednesday. The hosts had a disappointing series whitewash against India earlier this month and the latest win will give them the much needed morale boost.

Alastair Cook won the toss and decided to field first. The Three Lions struggled early in the game as the Lankan openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan made sure the hosts got off to a good start.

Sri Lanka posted a total of 317 runs for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. In reply, England struggled in their chase losing wickets at a regular interval, the only saviour being all-rounder Moeen Ali who kept the scoreboard ticking.

The left-handed batsman scored his maiden ODI hundred and was finally dismissed for 119. When Ravi Bopara came in lower down the order, there was still some hope left for England. However, he was unable to guide his side to victory and was the last man to be dismissed.

Sri Lanka won by the match by 25 runs and have taken a 1-0 lead in their five-match ODI series. Another win on Saturday will put more pressure on England in order to avoid a series defeat away from home.
